ECRIN promotes a Pan-European COVID-19 clinical research network
As the world is changing due to the COVID-19 situation, evidence based medicine is more than ever needed and well designed, scientifically and ethically sound clinical trials are necessary to provide this evidence to the benefit of patients and the medical community. ECRIN therefore promotes a pan-European cooperation to tackle COVID-19 prevention and treatment, joining forces and combining resources to create a pan-European COVID-19 clinical research network and multinational, multi-arm adaptive platform trials.
The EMA just published a paper “Clinical trials for Covid-19: can we better use the short window of opportunity?”, “Regulators are highlighting the need for a comprehensive international coordination mechanism to allow the conduct of adequately powered, randomised controlled trials, which can generate sound evidence on the effects of therapeutics or vaccines against COVID-19”, where ECRIN is mentioned as one of the instruments to promote such cooperation. As stated by Commissioner Gabriel:
Such an EU Clinical Trials Network would respond to the concerns of Member States by offering speed, scale, and solidarity.
