Enabling Clinical Research In Emergency And Acute Care Medicine Through Automated Data Extraction

Funding programme: Horizon Europe (N 101057726 *)

Budget: 7.3M €

Coordinator: IRFMN

Duration: 5 years (Sept 2022 - Aug 2027)

The central aim of the project is to enable clinical and quality of care assessment research using data extracted directly from electronic health records (EHR) of emergency departments (ED).

To reach this goal eCREAM has three main objectives:

  • to develop new technical solutions to extract reliable clinical information from structured and unstructured data contained in different electronic patient files;
  • to FAIRify (i.e. making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable) the established databases for clinicians, researchers, health policymakers and citizens while respecting the European and national legislations;
  • to pilot the exploitation of the established databases in two relevant use cases: i) assessment of ED propensity to hospitalise a patient, and ii) development of a dashboard to be used by citizens and policymakers to improve the quality of care in ED

ECRIN's role in eCREAM

ECRIN will ensure that the project complies with the ethical, legal and societal issues requirements connected with the sharing medical data. It will also help with the planning and implementation of the provision of access to the data collected and generated by the project, access that will be targeted to different perspectives, purposes, and skills. The project aims to apply the FAIR principles of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability to the data collected and the services developed.
