ECRIN coordinated project PERMIT guidelines published!
Personalised medicine (PM) is redefining healthcare by tailoring treatments to individual patients, but ensuring its research is rigorous and reliable has been an ongoing challenge. ECRIN coordinated the work conducted by the PERMIT project which presents over 30 key recommendations for the different steps of the PM research pipeline and guidance from end-to-end.
The PERMIT project has unveiled a comprehensive set of methodological recommendations designed to enhance the quality and impact of PM research at every stage of the pipeline. It has broken down the recommendations into 4 different pillars, the different steps:
• Collection of patient cohort and -omics data
• Machine learning methods for patient stratification
• Translational methods for personalised medicine
• Clinical trials for personalised medicine
A series of scoping reviews that mapped the methods used in PM research and a gap analysis were followed by working sessions and workshops where field experts analysed the gaps and developed recommendations. Through collaborative writing and consensus building exercises, the final recommendations were defined.
By bringing together a network of experts and stakeholders, the project has achieved consensus on robust methodologies that can streamline research processes, improve evidence quality, and ultimately lead to better patient care.
The PERMIT recommendations set a new standard for PM research, promising not only to boost reproducibility but also to accelerate the integration of innovative approaches into clinical practice. Researchers, clinicians, and policymakers are now urged to adopt these guidelines to drive the future of personalised healthcare.
