The European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ECRIN, www.ecrin.org), a public research organisation, is currently recruiting a Software Engineer.

 

About ECRIN:

ECRIN is the not-for-profit European research infrastructure specialising in multinational clinical research for all medical disciplines.

ECRIN connects national clinical research networks (mainly academic clinical trial units (CTUs)), having the capacity to manage clinical trials on the national level. ECRIN provides information, consultations and operational clinical trial tasks and services to Sponsors and/or investigators of clinical trials initiated by academic investigators or SMEs. ECRIN’s involvement covers all clinical trial activities, from study planning and preparation of grant applications, to the set-up and conduct of multinational clinical trials in any disease area.

About the Position:

The post holder will join a small existing team working in this area and will participate in the planning, modelling, design, implementation, testing and documentation of IT solutions, tools and services supporting clinical research. He or she may act as the technical representative of ECRIN in selected projects. Current projects include developing systems for metadata collection and processing, including data extraction through XML processing and web scraping, repository management tools to support data sharing and the secondary use of health data, and systems to support the ECRIN data centre certification programme. Expertise is required across the ‘full stack’, i.e. both back end work manipulating large databases and developing APIs, and front end work developing web portals and browser based tools. The post holder may also be involved in general IT support activities and system development within ECRIN’s internal workflows.

The Software Engineer shall work with the ECRIN core team in the Research Infrastructure Development Unit.

 

The main responsibilities of the Software Engineer will include the following:

Roles and Responsibilities:

  1. Participate in the planning, modelling, design, implementation, testing and documentation of IT solutions, tools and services supporting clinical research.
  2. Act as the technical representative of ECRIN in selected projects.
  3. Develop systems for metadata collection and processing, including data extraction through XML processing and web scraping, repository management tools to support data sharing and the secondary use of health data, and systems to support the ECRIN data centre certification programme.
  4. Expertise is required across the ‘full stack’, i.e. both back end work manipulating large databases and developing APIs, and front end work developing web portals and browser based tools.
  5. The post holder may also be involved in general IT support activities and system development within ECRIN’s internal workflows.

 

Profile:

  1. Scientific background (computer science, or mathematics, physics, biology)
  2. Experience in software development using C# / .Net Core. *
  3. Experience in software development using modern web technologies (e.g. AngularJS, ReactJS, Typescript), along with good knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript. *
  4. Experience in managing and accessing large scale relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server), including API development. *
  5. Experience in deploying, testing, and documenting software projects.
  6. Experience in server management, including scripting (e.g. bash or PowerShell).
  7. Strong oral and written communication skills
  8. Excellent written and spoken English (working language)
  9. A dedicated yet diplomatic personality

 

* Technologies currently in use within ECRIN projects include C# / .Net Core, AngularJS and PostgreSQL. Both Windows and Linux machines are used.

 

Desirable skills:

  1. Master’s degree or above in software development or related topic.
  2. Experience in data management in a scientific context.
  3. Knowledge of data protection challenges when dealing with sensitive health or clinical research data.
  4. Knowledge of other commonly used languages, e.g. Java, Python.
  5. Willingness to learn new languages and techniques, e.g. Go, GraphQL
  6. Experience in operating at European/international level.
  7. Interest and expertise in machine learning and / or NLP techniques.
  8. Interest and expertise in NoSQL approaches to data management.

Please note that candidates may be required to demonstrate technical expertise and knowledge during the interview process.

 

The post is a full-time contract according to French law. The salary is set according to European/international standards for similar positions and will depend on qualifications and experience.
