The European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ECRIN, www.ecrin.org), a public research organisation, is currently recruiting a Research Software Engineer.

About ECRIN:

ECRIN is a not-for-profit European research infrastructure, specialising in multinational clinical research for all medical disciplines. 

ECRIN connects national clinical research networks, mostly academic clinical trial units having the capacity to manage clinical trials on the national level. ECRIN provides information, consultations and operational clinical trial tasks and services to Sponsors and/or investigators of clinical trials initiated by academic investigators or Small and Medium Enterprises. ECRIN’s involvement covers all clinical trial activities, from study planning and preparation of grant applications to the set-up and conduct of multinational clinical trials in any disease area.

About the Position:

The post holder will be offered an initial six-month contract with the possibility of renewal to join a small existing team. He or she will participate in the planning, modelling, design, implementation, testing and documentation of IT solutions, tools and services supporting clinical research, and may act as the technical representative of ECRIN in selected projects. Current projects include a secure data repository for clinical research and a clinical metadata repository aggregating data from different registries.

Expertise is desirable on both back end (databases and APIs) and front end (web portals and browser based tools). The post holder may also be involved in general IT support activities and system development within ECRIN’s internal workflows.

The Research Software Engineer shall work with the ECRIN core team in the Research Infrastructure Development Unit.

The current environment.

We work both on Linux and Windows cloud based systems.

Currently we develop in Python, C# / .Net Core, AngularJS, ReactJS, Typescript.

We use PostgreSQL database and the JetBrains suite of IDEs for development.

Main Responsibilities:

1. Participate in the planning, modelling, design, implementation, testing and documentation of IT solutions, tools and services.

2. Maintain and further develop current tools and services.

3. Act as the technical representative of ECRIN in selected projects.

4. The post holder may also be involved in general IT support activities and system development within ECRIN’s internal workflows.

Desired Profile:

  1. Experience in software development and related tools (version control, GitHub).
  2. Ability and willingness to work in a team.
  3. Experience in one or more of the languages/platforms currently used (see above).
  4. Experience in deploying, testing, and documenting software projects.
  5. Written and spoken English (working language).
  6. Willingness to learn new languages and techniques.

Useful skills:

Experience in/knowledge of:

  • software development using C# / .Net Core
  • data management in a scientific context
  • deploying, testing, and documenting software projects
  • server management, including scripting (e.g. bash or PowerShell)
  • managing and accessing large scale relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)
  • API development
  • software development using modern web technologies (e.g. AngularJS, ReactJS, Typescript), along with good knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript
  • other common programming languages, e.g. Java

  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • A dedicated yet diplomatic personality

Please note that candidates may be required to demonstrate technical expertise and knowledge during the interview process.

The post is a full-time contract according to French law and allows remote working (two days per week). We can consider applications for part-time employment.

The salary is set according to European/international standards for similar positions and will depend on qualifications and experience.
